My parents came to the US as refugees from Laos in the late 1970s and had to assimilate to American culture with little to no English in their vocabulary from the start. To ease into American society, both my parents found ways more universal than speech to bond with others in their community until they got more comfortable with the English language. My father found a connectivity with math and my mother found it with childcare and cooking. For me photography has always been a language I’ve been comfortable with. I felt a rather unique way at expressing myself and what I’ve experienced through what I see. Visuals are a form communication that we sometimes overlook or undermine their importance and I want to be able to change most minds on it. Whether it’s my Nikon DSLR, old Pentax film or the iPhone that never leaves my side, I want to be able to capture the moments that catch my eye that I and others so often take for granted. No matter how big or small the moment.
